The Chairman of the North West Value for Money Forum has released an online buyer’s guide of how to get the best value for money when buying online. The reduction in the VAT sales tax rate to 15% has lead to some unfounded claims being made on “Savings” and “Price Reductions”.
The statement is to help people make their money go further in these had times.
1) If a price is still a nice round retail figure i.e. £9.99 there is a fair chance that the VAT reduction has not been passed on to the customer.( £9.99 in November is actually £9.80 in December with the VAT reduction). The retailer could be pocketing the Tax reduction for themselves.
2) To confirm this and indeed to do a very simple price comparison on any items you are buying the following action is recommended: - Find a number of reputable / known sites that sell the same products. Make a list of the item(s) you wish to purchase and then “Buy” the same item(s) on each site, before you confirm your purchase and give your card details you should receive a detailed breakdown of the Goods, Postage and VAT. This is called a Quotation. Now compare the TOTAL cost of your shopping basket across your chosen sites.
